house-hunting

The Husband and I don't always agree on many things, but we do share a strong, common interest: we both love talking about, visualising and dreaming of our future home.

From the hardwood floors, the fireplace in the living room, the spacious deck out in the backyard, the big, modern kitchen, little white picket fences surrounding the property, a garden for us to plant flowers and vegetables, a heated swimming pool, we visualise it all, often going to bed dreaming of our perfect abode.

In the evenings, we sit side by side on our couch, going through properties on sale on TradeMe, looking for houses that matches the description in our minds, or at least ones that have the potential to become our dream home, after a little TLC. Sometimes, we take walks through our neighbourhood, which one can describe as a rather affluent suburb in Auckland, and point out houses we would like to live in, and bits and pieces of home-character we like - such as wooden shutters for me, and plenty of backyard space for him. Of course, neither of us would turn down a view of the sea.

Thus, I have been furniture-whoring online, going through various web-sites and salivating over patterns, colours, designs and styles. I find I tend to lean towards modern, contemporary designs, clean and simple lines that also spell comfort, and rich, subtle, muted tones throughout, with a dash of vibrant colour here and there; such as a deep red wall on one side, or a striped tangerine and cream armchair in a beige living room. Now I know why my mum used to buy home and interior design magazines by the buckets.

Unless we win the Lotto, which we don't even play, it will take some time before we have a luxury abode to call our own. But until then, it's always good to dream. Not to mention heaps of fun, as we can be as outrageous and extravagant as we like.

Now, do excuse me while I light the fire in the fireplace, turn on some soft jazz, and snuggle on our big, comfy L-shaped couch with my (imaginary) dog by my side.
