The Husband and I are moving again. This will be our third move in two years, but one that we've been anticipating for awhile. Three weeks of intensive house-hunting led us to a one-bedroom apartment back in Ponsonby where we first met, right on the city fringe, which we will be moving to in JUST TWO DAYS!
Thus, the week has been spent in an organising haze: arranging for movers, disconnecting our phone and internet lines, arranging for a reconnect in the new place, having miscellaneous items sold and collected, packing up boxes and boxes of books, and the list goes on and on. It's amazing the amount of stuff you accumulate through the years.
That's why I'm such a fan of detaching and decluttering. When you attach yourself to things, you inevitably built up a collection of things that does nothing more than collects dust over the years. Even though you swear you will use it one day. My motto is, if something's been stored somewhere for a year without you looking at it or even knowing that it's there, then it is time to be thrown out. I'm always aware of the fact that as The Husband and I continue to share a life, the amount of stuff we have will keep accumulating until we have children one day. And then it'll probably be their stuff that accumulates. I therefore take every move we make as an opportunity to declutter. That way, we know the things we have are actually things we want and need.
This will be our third move in as short a time. And I know people who don't understand how we can enjoy moving so often. Perhaps this home will stay ours for awhile. But the truth of the matter is (and it is a truth that took me awhile to see), my home is wherever my husband is, and it is as simple as that. Whether it is across town, across the Tasman or somewhere across the other side of the world one day, home is truly where the heart is.
I wouldn't complain if the heart came with a heat pump, double-glazed windows and a fireplace though. =)
